How would the loss of a key person affect your business operations?

Some 2.4 million SMEs think the absence of a key employee would severely impact their business, according to research from Royal London. But it seems that an ‘it won’t happen to us’ mindset is preventing businesses from taking the necessary steps to protect their operations. Almost four in five SMEs have no form of protection against the absence of a key person. Yet it’s something 1.6 million SMEs have experienced.

Another issue acting as a barrier to protection was lack of knowledge. More than half (52%) of SMEs, accounting for three million businesses, have not discussed business protection with their accountant, financial or legal adviser, or anyone else inside or out of their business.

Ian Smart, Product Architect at Royal London, said, “The research highlights the glaring protection gap when it comes to SMEs. Despite many businesses recognising that a key person absence would have a severe impact, it is concerning that they have not yet talked about protecting their business with a financial adviser or taken out any form of protection.”

What is key person insurance?

Key person insurance is essentially a policy that a business takes out to protect itself against the financial loss it would suffer if a key person in their business were to die or be diagnosed with a critical illness. It’s similar to life insurance or critical illness cover but protects a business rather than an individual. The policy is paid for by the employer and any payout would go to the business.

The loss of a key person from your team can be devastating and may have long-term implications.

Receiving a lump sum through the policy can help your business stay on the right path. It may help replace profit that has been lost or support recruitment costs. When assessing the long-term continuity of a business, understanding how the loss of a key person will affect your operation is important.
